Abstract

This study is based on an analysis of the Burn Weaning Assessment Program (BWAP), a 26-factor form designed to assess the weaning of intubated patients in intensive care units. The main goal is to prevent variability in the clinical management of critically ill patients.

The origin of this research starts from the search for innovative and statistically more efficient approaches in modern medicine and direct experience in the emergency field. After documenting studies and performing daily analyses at Monsignor Dimiccoli Hospital in Barletta on a sample of patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, the study offered the opportunity to evaluate new approaches to care management and to assess the potential for weaning.

The results highlight the importance of using assessment tools to determine patient readiness for weaning from mechanically assisted ventilation (MVA).

The BWAP stands out for considering a wide range of factors, not only respiratory but also cardiovascular, metabolic and mental, thus helping to reduce the duration of VAM and hospitalization time. The crucial role of nurses in ensuring successful VAM detachment through clinical, rehabilitative, and educational interventions is emphasized.
